You can often determine the cause of the barking by watching your dog and what is going on that your dog is concerned about. Does your dog bark and howl when it’s left by itself? It’s probably lonely. Is your dog barking and jumping around in a playful manner? Chances are the dog is bored and looking for attention. Does he or she act aggressive and bark when someone walks by the house or when it sees another animal? The dog may be protecting its territory.
There is always some reason that your dog is barking. To stop dog barking you have to figure out what is causing the behavior.
How to Stop Dog Barking – Remove the Cause of the Barking
After you’ve figured out the cause of the barking, it’s simply a matter of removing that cause. If your dog barks at people walking down the street, close the drapes. If the dog is barking for attention, then teach the dog that barking won’t get your attention.
For example, if your dog barks to get your attention, the next time she barks, turn your back and ignore her. Don’t give her one bit of attention while she is barking. This may take some patience. If your dog is accustomed to getting your attention every time she barks, you may have to wait a while before she calms down. Now, as soon as she is quiet, lavish her in attention and praise. Whenever she barks again, ignore her until she is quiet and then immediately give her your attention.
Dogs learn through consistent repetition. You may have to repeat this several times. It may take a while, but don’t give up! If you act differently towards her bad behavior, you will confuse her and she won’t learn that barking does not get your attention.
Another Trick to Stop Dog Barking
Another trick if you want to learn how to stop dog barking is teaching your dog a “No Bark” or “No Speak” command. To teach your dog this, you first have to teach them to bark on command. Once they’ve learned this, you can teach them to stop barking on command. One of the easiest ways to train your dog to “speak” is to take advantage of when they bark on their own.
Whenever you hear your dog bark, give the command “Speak” then reward your dog with lots of loving or with a tasty snack. Repeat this every time you hear your dog bark. Eventually your dog will associate the command “Speak” with barking.
Now, once your dog has this down you can teach them to stop barking. The next time your dog barks, say “No Speak” in a stern voice. The dog will likely stop barking. If that does not work, you may need to be more aggressive. Fill a can with pennies. When your dog barks, say “No Speak” and shake the can of pennies. The sound will startle your dog and it will stop barking. You dog will soon associate the unplesant noise with “No Speak” and will stop barking on command.
