Another common reason why a dog may jump is because he is rewarded, either consciously or unconsciously, for the behavior. People tend to love the fact that their dogs are excited to see them when they arrive and may reinforce the behavior. Even showing negative attention to punish a dog that jumps can be seen as attention by the dog and may help to reinforce the behavior. Finally, some dogs may jump to exert their dominance.
To stop dog jumping, you need to engage in some consistent training to help break him of the habit. There are several techniques you can try. When you are arriving home or leaving, don’t let your dog jump on you as a greeting. Keep your entrances and exits low key. You may even want to delay greeting your dog for the first fifteen minutes or so after you arrive home. Do the same thing when you have visitors over to your home. Wait at least fifteen minutes before introducing the dog to your visitors.
Another thing you can do is stoop or bend over to greet your dog at his level. That way he will not need to jump up on you to greet you. Pet and praise him for not jumping.

Then you can praise him for his good behavior. The “off” command is another very important command for your dog to learn. Anytime your dog jumps on you or someone else, tell him “off.” You can also show your teeth with a snarl at your dog. This is how adult dogs get puppies to calm down. Also make sure you give your dog direct eye contact when you are giving him a command such as “down.”
It is very important that everyone in the family and your visitors as well cooperate with you to stop dog jumping and not reward the dog for jumping. Make sure everyone is on the same page. As with any form of dog training, consistency and patience is the key in teaching your dog to stop jumping.
